Tyler the Creator, whom is often seen as the "ringleader" behind Odd Future, is perhaps the most criticized member of the hip hop collective. Many people that hear his music instantly jump to conclusions about his religious ideologies and opinions on topics such as women and drugs. Despite the countless interviews where he says that many of the lyrics in his song are not his personal beliefs, more like content that he finds to be creative. During an interview with BBC's Newsnight's Stephen Smith he insisted "My lyrics aren't offensive. Some people find them offensive."

Earl Sweatshirt, often seen as a younger brother figure to Tyler the Creator is often regarded as the most "mysterious" member of Odd Future. Another member that is often ignored or complained about mostly due to the lyrics of his first self titled mixtape "Earl". Months after the release of his self titled debut album, Earl Sweatshirt was sent to a boarding school in Samoa by his mother. He stayed there for a year and sparked a "free Earl" campaign among Odd Future and their fans. Upon his return, he delivered an extra long and particularly extraordinary verse on the track "Oldie". Earl Sweatshirt has proven himself to be one of the most promising rappers and creative lyricists in the industry despite his youth. His lyrics are often explicit and offensive, but arguably in a conscious manner that is more artistic than simple hip-hop raciness.
